Let's start from the beginning.
mesibo was born out of necessity when Yusuf, the founder of mesibo, was approached to create a scalable and high-availability real-time messaging solution for an app. Unfortunately, most platforms at that time—and even today—aren’t designed for true scalability and high availability. Additionally, they charged exorbitant fees for their services. Most crucially, none offered the option of self-hosting—a feature central to mesibo's philosophy.
The idea was seeded: why not create a state-of-the-art, real-time communication platform that developers could download and deploy for FREE? The goal was to keep it open and extendable, allowing developers to download it for free and enhance it to suit their needs. This concept came naturally to Yusuf, who had previously built a similar platform for BlackBerry as part of his earlier startup, TringMe. TringMe was recognized for creating the first VoIP client for BlackBerry and pioneering Flash telephony.
Yusuf’s background in networking is extensive. He was the architect of one of the first WiFi access points, deployed at Frankfurt Airport by Lucent and Apple. He was also part of the Smart Antenna team at Stanford and has extensive experience in building highly scalable and high-availability switches at Bell Labs. His previous startup, TringMe, was known for creating Flash telephony, VoicePHP, and the first VoIP client for BlackBerry. Additionally, Yusuf contributed to the Linux kernel in its early days with his User Level Firewall (ULF) patch, which was widely used by ISPs in the early 2000s. He is also a co-inventor of HTTP compression, used by billions of web users today.
His and his team's experience culminated in mesibo, a platform that is capable of scaling to billions and highly secure.
mesibo was launched at the RISE conference in 2019 and was later demoed to startups at TechCrunch Disrupt the same year. As word spread about mesibo's capabilities, more companies began adopting it. With increased usage came a flood of feature requests, requiring more development and computing resources. While we could no longer sustain offering the service entirely for free, we remained committed to our core principle of accessibility.
Even today, mesibo charges only a nominal fee to cover the costs of providing best-in-class services. Features such as video and voice calls, which other platforms charge a premium for, remain free on mesibo. We've released a significant amount of open-source code, with the ultimate aim of making mesibo completely open-source. This approach aligns with our belief in democratizing communication technology and empowering developers and businesses of all sizes.
In addition, mesibo remains entirely free for educational institutions, students, research organizations, non-profits, climate tech startups, environmental conservation groups, and non-commercial apps aimed at social or ecological good.
Our commitment to community and developers has significantly paid off. Today, mesibo powers over 12,000 apps worldwide, serving a diverse range of clients—from ambitious startups to Fortune 500 companies, government agencies, airports, public transportation systems, smart cities, banks, telemedicine providers, social apps, and hospitality services. We're proud to be the backbone of communication for over 60 million users globally.
Our journey continues, fueled by the same passion and innovation that sparked our inception. We remain committed to ongoing innovation and active contributions to the developer community. We're also partnering with developers, startups, and hosting providers to build a robust ecosystem. With mesibo, you're not just choosing a platform; you're supporting a community-driven solution designed to provide a safe, secure, and scalable environment.
We look forward to interacting with you.
